Frequently asked questions

What is a single elimination bracket?

A knockout tournament: lose once and you are out. Winners move on each round until two teams are left for the final. It is the fastest format, with one fewer game than there are teams.

How many games are in a single elimination tournament?

Always one fewer than the number of teams: 8 teams play 7 games, 16 teams 15, 64 teams 63.

How are byes assigned?

Teams go into the next power-of-two bracket (16 slots for 12 teams) and the empty slots are byes for the top seeds, so seed 1 gets the first bye, seed 2 the second, and so on.

How should I seed teams?

Type the strongest team first. The bracket uses standard seeding (1 v 16, 8 v 9, 4 v 13, 5 v 12 …), which keeps the best teams apart until the late rounds. For a random draw press Shuffle.

Can I add a third-place game?

Not inside the bracket yet. Play the two losing semifinalists after the semifinals and note the result; a built-in third-place match is on our list.
