How a double elimination bracket works

Everyone starts in the winners bracket. Lose once and you move to the losers bracket (also called the consolation bracket); lose again and you are out. The losers bracket alternates between rounds where its own survivors play each other and rounds where new teams drop in from the winners bracket.

The grand final puts the unbeaten winners-bracket champion against the losers-bracket champion. If the losers-bracket team wins, both have one loss, so a second final decides it. That second game is the bracket reset. Read the full walkthrough in how double elimination works.

Frequently asked questions

What is a double elimination bracket?

A tournament where a team is out only after its second loss. Everyone starts in the winners bracket; a loss sends you to the losers bracket, and a loss there ends your run. The two bracket champions meet in the grand final.

What is a bracket reset?

The winners-bracket champion has not lost yet, so if the losers-bracket champion wins the grand final, both teams have one loss and a second, deciding final is played. This generator adds that game only when it is needed and labels it "If needed" until then.

How many games are in a double elimination tournament?

2n − 2 or 2n − 1, where n is the number of teams. For 8 teams that is 14 or 15; for 16 teams, 30 or 31; for 32, 62 or 63.

What happens with byes in double elimination?

If the team count is not a power of two, top seeds get a first-round bye in the winners bracket, and the matching slots in the losers bracket are byes too, so nobody plays an extra game because of the draw.

How does the losers bracket avoid rematches?

Teams dropping from the winners bracket are fed into the losers bracket in reverse order every other round, the standard method used by Challonge and most organisers, so recent opponents are kept apart.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. On a phone the bracket opens round by round (tap Bracket for the full tree), so you don’t have to pinch and zoom. Tap a team to advance it.
